Two Ways to Learn IB Physics
Does IB Physics Feel Harder Than It Should?
Sometimes an IB Physics concept makes sense when it is explained, but a different question appears and suddenly you are not sure which Physics principle, equation, model or approach to use.
This can happen in both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). You might understand the theory but still lose marks in calculations, graphs, data analysis or written explanations because you are unsure how to apply what you know to an unfamiliar IB-style question.
BrightStep helps identify where the difficulty is, explain the Physics clearly and practise applying it to the calculations, graphs, data-analysis tasks, scientific explanations and IB-style questions expected at Standard Level and Higher Level.
Students often come to IB Physics tutoring because they are:
Losing marks in multi-step SL or HL Physics calculations and mathematical problem-solving
Unsure what an unfamiliar IB Physics question is really asking or how to begin
Struggling to explain Physics ideas clearly using accurate scientific reasoning
Finding it difficult to connect concepts, equations, diagrams and models across IB Physics
Unsure how to analyse experimental data, graphs, uncertainties and scientific evidence
Unsure what to revise for an SL or HL assessment, scientific investigation or IB Physics exam
BrightStep helps identify where the difficulty is, explain the Physics clearly and practise applying it to the calculations, graphs, data-analysis tasks, scientific explanations and IB-style questions expected at Standard Level and Higher Level.
More Focus. More Questions. More Support.
Large Physics classes are designed to teach many students at the same pace.
At BrightStep, our 1-to-1 and Small Group IB Physics classes give both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students more individual attention, more opportunities to ask questions and more targeted practice on the Physics areas they actually need to improve.
Small classes. More individual attention.

Build IB Physics Understanding — Then Learn How to Apply It
Understanding the Physics theory is only the first step. Students also need to recognise what an IB Physics question is asking, which principle, equation or model applies and how to use it correctly.
BrightStep supports students studying both IB Physics Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) through clear explanations, mathematical problem-solving, graphs and data analysis, scientific reasoning, scientific investigation skills and IB-style question practice. The focus can change as the student's school topics, assessments, investigation work and IB examination priorities change.
What Your IB Physics Tutoring Can Include
Understand, Practise, Apply & Prepare
The BrightStep IB Physics Method
Good IB Physics tutoring should do more than show students the correct equation or answer.
Whether studying Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL), students need to identify where they became stuck, understand the Physics behind the question, choose an appropriate principle, equation or model and then apply that approach themselves.
The aim is to help both SL and HL students become more capable of approaching IB Physics questions independently over time.
Identify
Find the PriorityWe identify the IB Physics SL or HL area that needs attention first.
This might be a concept gap, recurring calculation error, difficult school topic, equation-selection problem, graph or data-analysis skill, scientific investigation requirement, upcoming assessment or IB examination priority.
Explain
Make It ClearWe break the Physics into clear, manageable steps and connect the new idea to concepts the student already understands.
The focus might be the underlying Physics principle, what an equation represents, how variables are related, how to interpret a diagram, graph or model, or why a particular problem-solving approach works. HL students can also work through the additional depth and mathematical complexity required at Higher Level.
Practise
Apply the IdeaThe student applies the Physics through worked examples and increasingly independent SL or HL problems.
Practice can include equation-based calculations, multi-step mathematical problems, diagrams, graphs, experimental data, conceptual questions and mixed IB-style Physics questions.
Correct
Learn From MistakesWe analyse mistakes while they are happening and identify why the solution or reasoning went wrong — not simply what the correct answer should be.
Feedback can focus on Physics understanding, equation selection, substitutions, units, significant figures, calculation steps, graphs, data interpretation, uncertainties, scientific reasoning and communication.
Strengthen
Build IndependenceWe reinforce the weak point and decide what IB Physics should be revised or practised next.
The next priority might be another question using the same principle, a related Space, Time and Motion, Waves, Fields, Matter or Nuclear and Quantum Physics concept, scientific investigation work, school assessment preparation or mixed SL / HL exam practice.
The aim is to help both SL and HL students become more capable of approaching IB Physics questions independently over time.
What Can a 60-Minute IB Physics Lesson Look Like?
Every IB Physics lesson is personalised, so the exact structure can change depending on whether the student is studying Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL), their current Physics topic, schoolwork, scientific investigation, assessment priorities and areas of difficulty. A typical 60-minute lesson might look like this:
If an SL or HL school assessment, scientific investigation or IB Physics examination is approaching — or the student needs urgent help with a different Physics topic — the lesson can adapt.
Check & Prioritise
0–10 minReview the student's current SL or HL Physics understanding, schoolwork, recent mistakes, investigation work or upcoming assessment and decide the most useful focus for the lesson.
Explain the Target Concept
10–25 minBreak down the difficult Physics concept, principle, equation, model, diagram, graph or calculation method into clear, manageable steps. For HL students, this can also include the additional conceptual depth and mathematical complexity required at Higher Level.
Guided Physics Practice
25–45 minWork through increasingly challenging IB Physics SL or HL problems with questions, prompts and feedback throughout. This may include equations, multi-step calculations, diagrams, experimental data, graphs, uncertainties, conceptual questions or scientific explanations.
Independent Application
45–55 minThe student attempts IB-style Physics questions with less guidance, choosing the relevant principle, equation or model and applying their mathematical problem-solving, data interpretation and scientific reasoning more independently.
Review & Next Priority
55–60 minIdentify what improved, what still needs work and which SL or HL Physics concept, calculation skill, graph, data-analysis task, question type or assessment priority should be revised or practised next.
If an SL or HL school assessment, scientific investigation or IB Physics examination is approaching — or the student needs urgent help with a different Physics topic — the lesson can adapt.

The tutor can review the student's working and responses, identify likely weaknesses and explain how Physics understanding, equation selection, substitutions, units, calculations, graphs, data interpretation and scientific reasoning could be improved.
IB Physics Curriculum & Topics
Which IB Physics levels do you teach?
BrightStep supports students studying both IB Physics Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).
Lessons can follow the sequence being taught at the student's school while focusing on the Physics concepts, equations, mathematical applications, experimental skills and problem-solving areas where the student needs the most support.
For Higher Level students, lessons can also address the additional conceptual depth, mathematical application and more complex multi-step problem-solving required at HL.
What IB Physics SL and HL topics can you help with?
IB Physics tutoring can support the major Physics areas studied across Standard Level and Higher Level, including space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics.
Lessons can also develop equation use, mathematical problem-solving, diagrams, graphs, experimental interpretation, data analysis and the ability to apply Physics concepts to unfamiliar questions.
Is Higher Level Physics tutoring different from Standard Level tutoring?
The underlying goal is the same: understand the Physics and learn how to apply it.
Higher Level students may need additional support with deeper conceptual connections, more advanced mathematical application and questions that combine several Physics ideas or require more complex multi-step reasoning.
Standard Level students can focus on building strong understanding, accurate equation use, mathematical confidence and effective application across the SL course.
Can BrightStep help with the IB Physics scientific investigation?
Tutoring can support the Physics understanding and scientific skills involved in experimental design, measurements, graphs, data analysis, uncertainties, evaluation, scientific reasoning and communication.
Students can ask questions about the Physics behind their investigation and strengthen their understanding of how experimental evidence should be interpreted.
The aim is to support the student's learning and understanding while the student remains responsible for completing and submitting their own assessed work.
Resources, Homework & Parent Progress
Do students receive homework and IB Physics learning resources?
Yes. BrightStep provides homework to reinforce lesson content and short notes to support learning and revision.
When preparing for school assessments or IB exams, lessons can also include relevant SL or HL Physics problems, equation practice, calculations, diagrams, graphs, data-analysis tasks and IB-style questions so students can apply what they have learned.
How do parents know whether their child is progressing in IB Physics?
Parents can receive feedback from the tutor about the student's Physics progress, strengths and areas that still need attention.
This can help parents understand which SL or HL Physics topics and skills the student is currently working on, what is improving and where further support may be useful.
Scheduling, Location & Policies
When should a student start IB Physics tutoring, and how often should they attend?
Students can start whenever they feel they need additional support — whether they are beginning IB Physics, finding a particular SL or HL topic difficult, falling behind or preparing for a school assessment, scientific investigation or IB examination.
Most students attend 1 or 2 lessons per week, depending on their goals, school workload and upcoming assessments.
