Two Ways to Learn IB Chemistry
Does IB Chemistry Feel Harder Than It Should?
Sometimes an IB Chemistry concept makes sense when your teacher explains it, but a different question appears and suddenly you are unsure which chemical idea, equation or calculation to use.
Whether you are studying Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL), you may understand the Chemistry but still lose marks because you are unsure how to apply it to calculations, data, explanations or unfamiliar IB-style questions.
BrightStep helps identify where the difficulty is, explain the Chemistry step by step and give you targeted practice with the types of SL or HL questions you need to solve.
IB Chemistry SL & HL students often need help because they are:
Losing marks in multi-step stoichiometry, quantitative Chemistry and other calculations
Unsure what an IB Chemistry question is asking or which concept should be applied
Finding it difficult to turn Chemistry knowledge into clear, precise exam responses
Struggling to connect ideas across Structure and Reactivity when questions combine several concepts
Unsure how to analyse experimental data, graphs, uncertainties or scientific evidence
Unsure what to prioritise when preparing for SL or HL Chemistry assessments and exams
BrightStep helps identify where the difficulty is, explain the Chemistry step by step and give you targeted practice with the types of SL or HL questions you need to solve.
More Focus. More Questions. More Support.
Larger IB Chemistry classes are designed to teach many students at the same pace. But students studying Standard Level and Higher Level can have very different questions, strengths and areas that need more attention.
At BrightStep, our 1-to-1 and Small Group IB Chemistry tutoring gives SL and HL students more individual attention, more opportunities to ask questions and more targeted practice on the Chemistry they actually need to improve.
Small classes. More individual attention.

Build IB Chemistry Understanding — Then Learn How to Apply It
Understanding the Chemistry is only the first step. IB students also need to recognise what a question is asking, choose the right chemical ideas and apply them accurately.
Whether you are studying Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL), tutoring can combine clear explanations, calculation practice, data analysis, chemical reasoning, scientific investigation support and IB exam preparation.
What Your IB Chemistry Tutoring Can Include
Understand, Practise, Apply & Prepare
The BrightStep IB Chemistry Method
Good IB Chemistry tutoring should do more than explain the correct answer.
Whether a student is studying Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL), tutoring should help them identify where they became stuck, understand the Chemistry behind the question, learn a clearer approach and then apply that approach independently.
The aim is to help SL and HL students become more capable of approaching IB Chemistry questions independently over time.
Identify
Find the PriorityWe identify the IB Chemistry area that needs attention first.
This might be an SL or HL concept gap, recurring calculation error, difficult Structure or Reactivity topic, practical skill, scientific investigation priority or upcoming IB assessment or exam.
Explain
Make It ClearWe break the Chemistry into clear, manageable steps and connect new ideas to concepts the student already understands.
The focus may be atomic structure, bonding, stoichiometry, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox, organic chemistry or deeper HL chemical reasoning.
Practise
Apply the IdeaThe student applies the Chemistry through guided examples and increasingly independent SL or HL questions.
Practice can include stoichiometry and quantitative calculations, chemical equations, data interpretation, graphs, experimental questions and IB-style written responses.
Correct
Learn From MistakesWe analyse mistakes while they are happening and identify why the response went wrong — not simply what the correct answer should be.
Feedback can focus on Chemistry understanding, calculation steps, equations, units, significant figures, experimental data, chemical reasoning and scientific communication.
Strengthen
Build IndependenceWe reinforce the weak point and decide what IB Chemistry should be revised or practised next.
The next priority might be another question on the same skill, a related Structure or Reactivity concept, deeper HL content, scientific investigation work or mixed IB Chemistry exam practice.
The aim is to help SL and HL students become more capable of approaching IB Chemistry questions independently over time.
What Can a 60-Minute IB Chemistry Lesson Look Like?
Every IB Chemistry lesson is personalised, so the exact structure can change depending on whether the student is studying Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL), their current Structure or Reactivity topic, schoolwork, assessment priorities and areas of difficulty. A typical 60-minute lesson might look like this:
If an IB Chemistry assessment, scientific investigation deadline or exam is approaching — or the student needs urgent support with a different SL or HL topic — the lesson can adapt.
Check & Prioritise
0–10 minReview the student's current SL or HL Chemistry understanding, schoolwork, recent mistakes or upcoming assessment and decide the most useful focus for the lesson.
Explain the Target Concept
10–25 minBreak down the difficult Chemistry idea into clear, manageable steps. This could involve atomic structure, bonding, stoichiometry, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox, organic chemistry or deeper HL chemical reasoning.
Guided IB Chemistry Practice
25–45 minWork through increasingly challenging SL or HL Chemistry questions with prompts and feedback. Practice may include quantitative calculations, equations, experimental data, graphs, chemical explanations and IB-style written responses.
Independent Application
45–55 minThe student attempts an appropriate SL or HL IB Chemistry question with less guidance, applying the concept, calculation method, data interpretation or chemical reasoning more independently.
Review & Next Priority
55–60 minIdentify what improved, what still needs work and what IB Chemistry should be revised or practised next. The next priority may be another Structure or Reactivity topic, deeper HL content, scientific investigation work or exam-style practice.
If an IB Chemistry assessment, scientific investigation deadline or exam is approaching — or the student needs urgent support with a different SL or HL topic — the lesson can adapt.

Personalised Learning & Catch-Up Support
What happens during a 1:1 IB Chemistry lesson?
The lesson can focus on what the student needs most, whether they are studying Standard Level or Higher Level. The tutor can check understanding, identify Chemistry gaps, explain difficult concepts step by step, work through examples and practise calculations, data analysis and IB-style questions.
Students are encouraged to ask questions throughout the lesson. The tutoring can then move towards increasingly independent problem-solving as their understanding improves.
Can tutoring help if I am behind in IB Chemistry?
Yes. Tutoring can help students rebuild important Chemistry foundations, catch up on missed content or revisit earlier Structure and Reactivity ideas that are affecting their current work.
It can also support students who are already performing well but want more challenging SL or HL questions, greater calculation accuracy, stronger chemical reasoning and more focused preparation for assessments and exams.
Lessons can be adjusted to the student's current level, school sequence, weak areas and goals.
Assessment & IB Exam Preparation
Can BrightStep help with IB Chemistry assessments and final exams?
Yes. Lessons can support both school Chemistry assessments and IB Chemistry examination preparation for Standard Level and Higher Level students.
Support can include revising Structure and Reactivity concepts, quantitative calculations, chemical equations, experimental data, graphs, chemical reasoning, written responses, IB-style questions and recurring errors identified during practice.
Can we focus mainly on an upcoming IB Chemistry assessment or exam?
Yes. If an SL or HL Chemistry assessment or examination is approaching, tutoring can prioritise the Chemistry knowledge and skills most relevant to that task.
Students can bring school material, revision questions, practice papers, marked work and topics they are unsure about so the available lesson time can be used efficiently.
Can you explain why I lost marks and show me how to improve my IB Chemistry answers?
Yes. Students can bring marked assessments, practice questions or exam-style Chemistry work to the lesson.
The tutor can review the student's calculations and written responses, identify where the approach became inaccurate or incomplete and explain how chemical reasoning, calculations, data interpretation and scientific communication could be improved.
IB Chemistry Curriculum & Topics
Do you teach both IB Chemistry Standard Level and Higher Level?
Yes. BrightStep supports both IB Chemistry Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).
Lessons can follow the Chemistry sequence being taught at the student's school while focusing on the particular Structure and Reactivity concepts, calculations, practical skills and assessment priorities that need the most attention.
Higher Level tutoring can provide the additional depth, complexity and chemical reasoning required for HL content.
What IB Chemistry Structure topics can you help with?
Support can include Structure-related Chemistry such as particulate models, atomic structure, electron arrangements, periodic trends, bonding, molecular structure and relationships between structure and physical properties.
Lessons can focus on understanding the models, interpreting representations and applying the Chemistry to unfamiliar SL or HL questions rather than simply memorising definitions.
What IB Chemistry Reactivity topics can you help with?
Reactivity support can include areas such as quantitative chemistry, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox chemistry and organic chemistry.
Students can also work on multi-step calculations, chemical equations, experimental evidence and questions that require several Chemistry ideas to be connected.
Can BrightStep help with IB Chemistry practical skills and the scientific investigation?
Yes. Tutoring can support the Chemistry understanding and scientific skills involved in experimental planning, processing data, graph interpretation, uncertainties, evaluation, scientific reasoning and communication.
Students can also receive support understanding the Chemistry behind their scientific investigation and improving the reasoning and analytical skills needed to communicate their work clearly.
Resources, Homework & Parent Progress
Do students receive homework and IB Chemistry learning resources?
Yes. BrightStep provides homework to reinforce lesson content and short notes to support learning and revision.
Depending on the student's needs, practice can focus on SL or HL concepts, calculations, data-analysis questions, chemical explanations and IB-style questions related to the areas covered during tutoring.
How do parents know whether their child is progressing in IB Chemistry?
Parents can receive feedback from the tutor about the student's Chemistry progress, strengths and areas that still need attention.
This can help parents understand what the student is currently working on, whether they are studying SL or HL, which skills are improving and where additional support may be useful.
Scheduling, Location & Policies
When should a student start IB Chemistry tutoring, and how often should they attend?
Students can start whenever they feel they need additional Chemistry support — whether they are beginning the IB course, finding a Structure or Reactivity topic difficult, falling behind or preparing for an assessment, scientific investigation or final examination.
Most students attend 1 or 2 lessons per week, depending on their goals, school workload, current SL or HL priorities and upcoming assessments.
Is IB Chemistry tutoring available online or face-to-face?
Yes. BrightStep offers both face-to-face IB Chemistry tutoring and online tutoring via Zoom.
Both Standard Level and Higher Level students can choose the option that works best for their location and schedule.
What happens if we need to reschedule an IB Chemistry lesson?
