How We Teach

Understand It. Practise It. Use It Independently.

BrightStep tutoring is not just about getting through today's homework. We help students understand why an approach works, practise it properly and gradually use it with less support.

Start With the Gap

Find the step, concept or question type causing difficulty instead of repeating material the student already understands.

Explain It Clearly

Break difficult ideas into manageable steps and connect each step to the reason behind it.

Practise With Purpose

Use targeted questions to practise the exact skills, mistakes and question types that need more work.

Reduce the Help

Move from guided examples to independent attempts so students learn how to approach similar questions themselves.

Inside a BrightStep Lesson

From “I Don't Get It” to “I Can Do This”

The exact lesson changes depending on the student, but the learning process follows a simple progression.

Identify Where You're Stuck

Look at the current topic, previous mistakes or a question the student cannot confidently complete.

Example: “Why do I keep losing marks here?”

Explain the Idea Clearly

Break the concept into smaller steps, revisit any missing foundation and explain why the method works.

Clear explanation before more questions

Practise With Guidance

Apply the idea to carefully chosen questions while the tutor gives feedback on reasoning, working and mistakes.

Explain → Try → Correct → Try again

Try It With Less Help

Attempt a similar question more independently to check whether the understanding can be used without prompts.

The goal: solve the next one yourself
When a student can explain the idea and use it independently, tutoring moves on to the next priority rather than repeating what they already know.
Meaningful Progress

Progress You Can Actually Notice

Progress is not only a final grade. It is also understanding a concept more clearly, making fewer repeated mistakes and being able to solve the next question with less help.

BrightStep does not guarantee a particular ATAR, study score, HSC band or grade. Academic outcomes depend on many factors. Our focus is on the learning process we can directly support: understanding, practice, feedback and preparation.

Student & Parent Experiences

Start With the Next Thing You Want to Improve

Whether it is one difficult topic, repeated mistakes or an upcoming assessment, tutoring can begin with the area that needs attention first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Before You Get Started?

Here are answers to some of the questions students and parents may have before starting. If you are still unsure, start with a conversation and we can help you work out the right support.

What curricula does BrightStep support?

BrightStep provides tutoring support for VCE, HSC, IB and Years 7–10 Science students.

Tutoring is designed around the curriculum, subject and year level the student is currently studying.

VCE HSC IB Years 7–10
Which subjects can I get tutoring for?

BrightStep focuses on Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Years 7–10 Science.

Subject availability can depend on the curriculum and tutor availability, so contact us if you are unsure whether your exact subject is currently supported.

Chemistry Physics Mathematics Science
Are BrightStep lessons online?

Yes. BrightStep provides online tutoring for students across Australia.

Online lessons allow students to learn from home while still asking questions, working through examples and completing targeted question practice with their tutor.

How much does tutoring cost?

BrightStep currently offers two ongoing tutoring formats:

One-to-One $60 per lesson
Small Group $40 per student / lesson

You can also begin with a free 30-minute introductory trial.

What happens in the free 30-minute trial?

The free trial gives you an opportunity to start with a conversation before deciding on ongoing tutoring.

You can discuss what you are studying, which areas currently feel difficult and what support you are looking for. It also gives you a chance to experience the BrightStep tutoring approach.

What is the difference between one-to-one and small-group tutoring?

One-to-one tutoring gives one student the tutor's focused attention, allowing the lesson pace, questions and priorities to be adjusted around that student.

Small-group tutoring gives students a lower-cost option while learning in a small shared environment.

If you are unsure which format is more suitable, you can discuss this during your free trial.

Can tutoring focus on an upcoming SAC, assessment or exam?

Yes. Upcoming assessments can help determine which topics and question types should be prioritised.

Tutoring can include concept revision, targeted question practice, identifying repeated mistakes and assessment preparation.

What should a student bring to a tutoring lesson?

Students can bring the material that is most relevant to what they are currently learning.

This might include school questions, notes, worksheets, practice problems, assessment feedback or a topic they have been finding difficult.

You do not need to know exactly what is wrong before the lesson. Identifying the difficult step is part of the tutoring process.

Will the tutor just help with homework?

Homework can be used when it reveals an area the student does not understand, but the goal is not simply to complete today's worksheet.

BrightStep focuses on helping students understand the idea, practise the skill and gradually complete similar questions with less help.

How do I know who will be teaching me?

BrightStep aims to show relevant tutor information clearly, including subject expertise, qualifications, curriculum experience and relevant safety information.

The aim is for students and parents to understand who is providing the tutoring rather than relying only on a generic “expert tutor” description.

Do I need to make a long-term commitment?

You can begin with the free 30-minute trial before deciding whether BrightStep is the right fit for you.

Start with a conversation, understand the available support and then decide on the next step.

Still Have a Question?

Tell us your year level, curriculum, subject and what you are currently finding difficult. We can help you work out where to start.
